HBCU DORM ROOM DESIGN GRANT

HBCU DORM ROOM DESIGN GRANT

The spaces we inhabit shape how we think, create, and grow. For students beginning college, a dorm room is one of the first environments they fully claim as their own, setting the foundation for the person they are becoming.

The Inherit the Room Grant was created to support Black male students entering HBCUs with the opportunity to begin college in a space designed with intention. Through this program, recipients receive a fully designed dorm room created in collaboration with the SPACE team, giving them an environment that supports focus, creativity, and personal growth from the moment they arrive on campus.

"As HBCU graduates, we created this grant to give young Black men entering these institutions a space that reflects who they are, where they come from, and the future they are stepping into."

SPACE CO-FOUNDERS: RONN RICHARDSON & DANIEL SCOTT

We are awarding six graduating high school seniors a $3,000 dorm room design grant to help design and furnish their on-campus housing.

Each recipient will work with a professional interior designer and our team to design and furnish their dorm room from start to finish. The $3,000 grant covers the core elements needed to complete the space, including decor, bedding, lighting, and everyday room essentials. Recipients will also receive SPACE fragrance products and will form a small cohort connected through mentorship and programming throughout the year.

Applications for the Inherit the Room Grant will officially open in late April 2026. Below you will find the full details of the program, including eligibility, what the grant covers, how recipients are selected, and the overall timeline.

Applicant Eligibility
Applicants must be Black male students who will begin their first year at a Historically Black College or University in fall 2026. Applicants must provide proof of acceptance to an HBCU and submit all required application materials during the official application period.
What the Grant Includes
Each recipient receives a $3,000 dorm room design grant. Recipients will work with the SPACE team and a professional interior designer to select and curate the items needed to complete their dorm room, including decor, bedding, lighting, and everyday room essentials. The grant funds will only be used for items selected through this design process. Funds are applied directly to the selected items and are not issued to recipients as cash. The grant does not cover tuition, housing fees, or other university expenses.
Application Requirements
The application will include several components designed to help the selection committee understand each applicant’s perspective and design vision. Applicants will complete an essay response to a prompt, create a visual mood board that reflects their vision for their dorm room, and submit a short video introduction. Additional instructions and submission details will be provided when the application officially opens.
How Recipients Are Selected
Applications will be reviewed by a selection committee composed of professionals across design, creative, and cultural industries. The committee will review each submission and evaluate applicants based on their perspective, creativity, and vision for how they would shape their living environment during their first year at an HBCU. Final recipients will be selected following the committee review process.
Grant Timeline
Applications will open in April 2026 and close in May 2026. Applications will be reviewed in June/July 2026. Grant recipients will be announced in August 2026, ahead of the Fall semester move-in period.
